Useful Information about Northern Cyprus (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus):

Politics:

Since 1974, Cyprus has been partitioned into two areas.  The Greek southern area is the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish northern area is termed the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.  The politics of the island are complicated (as difficult for an outsider to understand as those of Ireland), however, for the purposes of tourism, these issues can be disregarded.  You will be very much welcomed as a visitor into Northern Cyprus, the local inhabitants are amongst the most gentle and friendly people you will ever encounter.

Visas/Vaccinations

If you hold a British passport, you do not need a visa to visit Northern Cyprus. At this time no vaccinations are required or advised.

Getting There:

Travel to Northern Cyprus from the UK is very simple.  We would be very glad to help with your flight booking and can arrange for taxi transport for you at either airport.

Take a look at our Flights Page for recommended flights and links to airlines and flight agents.

Hire Car:

You will need to hire a car to really get the most out of your holiday.  Car hire is unbelievably cheap—starting at around £16 per day and as we drive on the left in Northern Cyprus, there is no need to feel at all nervous.  Petrol is also very cheap—roughly 1/2 the price of the UK.  We can arrange car hire for you and you can have the car delivered to you at the villa.  Taxi transport from and to the airports is generally included in the price of a hire car. There is covered parking for two cars at the villa.  To get a quote or book car hire click

Voltage:

Voltage is 240 volts and electrical appliances are fitted with UK style 3 pin 13 amp plugs.  You don’t need any special adaptors on standard UK appliances.

Currency:

Currency in Northern Cyprus is the YTL (Turkish Lira).  There are roughly 2.8 YTL to the GBP.  Sterling is widely accepted.  There are many ATM machines—the nearest to the house is a 10 minute drive.

Water:

Water is safe to drink from the tap.  Many people still prefer to drink bottled mineral water and this is readily available.

Language:

The official language is Turkish but English is very widely spoken.

Cleaning/Maintenance:

The villa will be cleaned before you arrive and the linen and towels changed in the second week of a two week let.  The Property Manager will arrange to call on you within the first 48 hours of your arrival to ensure that everything is to your satisfaction. The pool company and the gardener will call during the week and we ask for your understanding in this necessary maintenance.

Welcome Packs:

We can provide a variety of welcome packs for your party, from basics to luxuries.  Our basic welcome pack (included in rental price)  contains everything you need for your arrival including milk, butter, bread, cereals, eggs, cheese, fruit juice, toilet paper, tea, coffee, sugar, wine and beer.  But, maybe you’d like some champagne!  Maybe you’d like Marmite!  Just let us know your requirements at the time of booking.

Nightlife:

There are a large variety of restaurants in the area—see our links page for recommendations.  A full meal will cost from around 10YTL to 26 YTL per person.  Local branded drinks are extremely cheap.  Kyrenia harbour front is always lively at night and it is especially enjoyable to sit over a coffee or brandy and watch the world wander by.  There are also casinos  if you fancy a flutter and a number of nightclubs.  Escape Beach has an open air night club in the summer months that is a great favourite for teenagers.

Weather:

Northern Cyprus enjoys typical Mediterranean weather with a long, hot dry summer which runs from early May through October, warm spring and autumn and a short winter running from January through March which is when the most rain falls.  Summer temperatures can reach 35C and winter temperatures never fall below 14C.  Frost is unheard of, other than high in the mountains.  It is not uncommon for us to eat outside at Christmas and New Year.

Winter is a great time to visit if you like a more peaceful environment—it can be rainy but is not cold by British standards.  Often days are sunny and then walking and sightseeing are a special delight.  Spring is an especially beautiful time with warm sunny days and the hills covered in wild flowers.  For many people, this is their favourite time to visit.  Summer brings long hot days and warm nights.  Ideal for lazing by the pool or on the beach, enjoying barbecues and midnight swims in your private garden.  Warm temperatures continue into the autumn, gradually cooling down as November approaches although the sea stays warm.

Shopping:

There are many fascinating shops in the winding streets of the major towns: kyrenia, Famagusta and Nicosia.  You will find prices are low compared to many other places in the Mediterranean.  Generally speaking, you are not required to haggle.  Supermarkets are well stocked and you will find many British products on their shelves.  The nearest supermarket to the house is a 5 minute drive at the bottom of the hill.  Fresh bread is available every day together with a wide range of fresh vegetables, milk and other goods.  There is a butcher in the same group of shops.
